#FutureSPACES pt.11 - Onto the Top

After finishing the 3 day mural in Hastings on Monday, we took a day off and then we were back at the post office to get back to work.

Getting it Right

On February 25th we started to draw out the last elements (girl, sugarcane) at the top of the scale. Throughout the next 2 days, we went back and forth with what to do with making sure the proportion of the girl at the top was right. After taking photos of one of our arms in the correct position we used that image as reference for the proportions and placement on the actual painting.

For the remainder of that week, we continued to add details to everything that we had drawn out, and we started to map out and paint the sides of the scale. We had gotten good at making respective plans on what we were going to tackle on any given day so we were getting through the painting process fairly fast.

We also started to add the background color around the objects we were already painting, so that we didn't had to go back and do that when everything was done. We painted it as we went along.

Up you go

For the remainder of the time of painting the mural at the post office, we had a step-by-step process for preparing to go up on the scaffolding. We would pack a box with everything we needed for the day. Each of us would take into consideration what we were painting and decide on what color paint, what size brushes, which sketches, and what other materials(ruler, rope, level) we would need.

After we would pack the box with most of what we need one of us would carry it up to the wall and the others would grab whatever else we needed that didn't fit in the box. Once we got everything up onto the first flight of stairs of the scaffolding we would form a train going up the scaffolding. By the week of February 25th, we were all working in the middle so we would pass most of the supplies to the middle.

After that, we would each take out what brushes and color paints we were working with because when we were in our spots ready to paint, it was just to much hassle to consider getting down.

We used the same train process to pack up all of our supplies to take off the scaffolding and into the storage room.

Professional Shots

February 29th, 2020 was the first Saturday that we worked on this particular mural and luckily for us we got our first set of photos not taken by one of us. Our friend Jade worked during the week but had promised to come and take some photos for us of the mural and of us painting on the weekend. We were so glad for this not only because we would have some nicer quality shots but because we wouldn't have to stop painting to get progress shots as well.

Stay tuned for more professional shots in the coming weeks.
