#FutureSPACES pt.9 - Finding Our Stride

February 17th, 2020 was days 3 of painting the mural. After a nice 2 days of rest, we were back at the post office and ready to work.

The New Routine

On arrival at the post office, we went inside to check in by writing down our names and the time that we arrived. With that completed, we received the keys for the bathroom and the storage room where we kept all our equipment and supplies.

Filling our containers with water and gathering what we needed from the storage room we returned the keys to the front desk and started to make our way up the scaffolding.

Visitors

The guards at the Post Office passed through every so often to check on us and to see our progress. We were also visited by Malcolm-Emillio (Toronto born, world based artist) on multiple occasions while he was passing through Bridgetown.

On Day 3 we were visited by Shane Eastmond and Kevon Hall of PM Splash. Kevon came to help us out for an hour around lunchtime before he had to go to a job he had scheduled and Shane dropped by to see how we were doing.

We are thankful to all of those that visited us during the time of painting this mural. You helped to get our mind off of painting, even if just for a little while.

Day 3

We dedicated this day to starting the middle of the mural, seeing as the border was mostly finished.

Before we were able to start the middle We figure out how to get across to one of the platforms that had a missing section on the border.

Measuring Up

Taking our measuring tape we measure the width of the painting (border to border) and divided it in half to find the middle. Once we found the middle of the wall we drew a line with the level so we had a reference line.

We used the printed sketch to approximate the starting point as well as the height and width of all the elements in the middle. Starting from the bottom, we used the rope to measure 4ft from the inside edge of the border. That is where we started the bottom of the chattel house

By the end of day 3 we had drawn out and applied the base color for 3/4 of the imagery in the middle including:

  1. Chattel house

  2. One cent

  3. Bajan cherries (including leaves)

  4. Ackees

  5. Snowcone

  6. Mount Gay bottle

  7. Windmill
