#FutureSPACES pt.8 - The Official Annoncement!

Writer's picture: A3A3

On Day 2 of painting the mural, the press release with the official announcement that we had won the competition was posted.

50ft and Counting

We knew the post was supposed to be posted by February 14th, but we were in such a zone painting that it completely slipped or mind. When the announcement was made we were about 50ft off the ground. Close to the end of the day, Akilah's phone was going off repeatedly but she didn't check it. She assumed it was another client that knew that they were painting and was just sending information that could be check up on when we got down from the scaffolding.

Once we were finished for the day she checked her phone and realized what the messages were about it was her family sending her the post and send their congratulations to us.

Roadblock

On Day 1 when we started painting there was scaffolding missing in some areas. Because of this, we had to work accordingly until the scaffolding was readjusted.

At first, we did not think we would need to reach those areas, but we quickly realized that we did and we informed our representative and she spoke with the contractors about getting the scaffolding readjusted.

Day 2

Driving up to the Post Office on day 2 we could see through the dust guard and we realized that we wanted the border at the top to be thicker so that is what we started with on day 2.

While Alanis and Anna extended the top of the boarder, Akilah started working on the crinkled edges that lined the perimeter of the stamp using a marker and a stencil made from bristol board. Once the crinkles at the top were filled in, Akilah moved on to the lettering at the top of the stamp and Anna and Alanis finished the remainder of the crinkles around the border.

It was our goal to start from the top and work our way down for as many things as we could.

After using the rope and a ruler to measure out the size of each letter, Akilah used masking tape to mark out the body of the letters. Once that was finished she started to freehand the lettering, using a sketch to see the font style she was emulating.

Exhaustion

It was official, at the end of Day 2 we decided we were not going to be working on the weekends because our bodies needed some time to rest. After 2 days working from around 8:00 am - 4:00 pm while wearing harnesses and carrying supplies up and down 60ft of scaffolding, we were exhausted. At the end of those 2 days, all we wanted was to take a sea bath and 4 days of sleep. We never realized how heavy the harnesses were until we took them off on that 2nd day.
