#FuturesSPACES pt.7 - The Big Day!

February 13th, 2020 was The Big Day! It was the first day of painting the mural on the General Post Office wall.

Arrival and Equipment

On the day we arrive on-site at 9:00 am. After changing into our painting clothes we were off with the head of maintenance to learn all about the harnesses that would be our best friends for the next few weeks.

After putting on our harnesses we made our way up onto the scaffolding to get a lay of the land while we waited for one of the representatives and contacts for the #FutureSPACES mural to bring us some hard hats. The rep asked us what color hard hat we wanted and we made a joke by asking for them to be pink. We honestly did not expect her to find hard hats that were not just pink but that were hot pink.

Decisions

After receiving the hard hats we were left alone to start working. We discussed what we wanted to start with and how big the stamp should be overall. Once we decided to start with the border of the stamp and that the mural should start 1ft from the edge of the

wall, we got started.

Day 1 - The Process

We made our way to the top of the wall with paint, brushes, the rope, the level, and a sketch of the mural with a grid. Starting from the top right corner we counted the number of squares on the sketch and translated that into ft, then we used the rope to measure the distance onto the wall.

Once we measured multiple points we used the level to create a straight line across the top and down the side. We continued this method throughout the whole process of painting the border. While Anna and Alanis continued to draw out the remainder of the border Akilah was left to fill in the border starting from the very top and working her way down. When the outlines of the border were drawn out everywhere they could reach, Anna and Alanis started to fill in the border and as well.

At the end of day 1 we had the flat color on majority the boarder.
